EUTHANASIA

Today the SacBee ran a story about Gregg Gour, a young man dying of aids and his lobbying for Assembly bill 651 a right to die bill sponsored by Patty Berg D-Eureks and Lloyd Levine D-Van Nuys. I sympathize with Mr Gour and anyone going through a long protracted death. However euthanasia is not the answer. As a nurse I will recognize your do not resuscitate order or your request for comfort care only but don't make me a person who will end life. In most cases the way it would work is your doctor would come into the hospital talk with you, write and order then leave. Then the nurse would carry out the orders and give you the medication ordered. I would have to quit I would not do it. Even if the Assembly bill would require that the physicians be there and carry out the order themselves I would still recluse myself from your care. Your right to die does not trump my right not to be a harbinger of death. I would rather be a Wal-Mart store greeter.

That's really chickenshit of the doctors. No wonder so many are apathetic about euthanasia... they don't have to do the kill.

In Gregg's case he had the med's and did it himself. He had a friend with him and while there are many of us that knew Gregg and will miss him, he was fighting for that right to not go through what his partner and so many others had gone through. It's a tough question anyway you slice it.
