ANGST RISES AS SALES TAX FADES

Dan Walters editorial ANGST RISES AS SALES TAX FADES is a great primer as to what happens when tax spending legislators see our money as theirs. When any tax is raised we have to rethink our home budgets to cover the extra cost. Legislators be they Federal or State regard the states budget as our problem with the only fix is to raise our taxes. To them giving up pet projects or to end programs that keep people dependent on government is unthinkable. Its a sad state of affairs when the largest employer is the government.
Unfortunately the nanny state is the mind set of most of our citizens. They see the state as a fix all for all their problems, even if their problem was of their own making. Alexis de Tocqueville understood the American Ideal when he wrote in Democracy in America
"As social conditions become more equal, the number of persons increases who, although they are neither rich nor powerful enough to exercise any great influence over their fellows, have nevertheless acquired or retained sufficient education and fortune to satisfy their own wants. They owe nothing to any man, they expect nothing from any man; they acquire the habit of always considering themselves as standing alone, and they are apt to imagine that their whole destiny is in their own hands." If only today's citizens had this grit.
